 OVERVIEW ON DAK Minimize

Geographical location:

 

Dak Lak enjoys a favorable location at the heart of a plateau in the South Central region of Vietnam and is known as the capital of the Central Highlands. Dak Lak is at the heart of many networks linking Viet Nam’s great cities and provinces including national highway No. 26 to Nha Trang, national highway No.27 to Da Lat and flights to Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and Hanoi and neighboring Cambodia. The road network reaches the centre of all the communes and wards in the province.

 

Land and mineral resources:

 

Dak Lak has a vast land area of 1,312,537 ha used for habitation, construction and manufacture purposes. Agricultural land accounts for 466,426 ha, forest lands for 618,228 ha, specialized lands for 69,046 ha and unused lands 145,871 ha. Most of the land provides wood and other forest products to meet the demand of wood processing industries and the other developmental needs.

 

The soil has characters of red or grey bazan, favorable for industrial and fruit trees. Dak Lak’s savannas also have the potential for cattle. Currently Dak Lak is the country’s foremost producer and exporter of coffee.

 

The province also contains several precious minerals. The kaolin reserve of Dak Lak is estimated to contain 50 millions of m3  of clay for brick and tile production, aslar facing stones and stone for construction, enough for the demand of the local construction industry. The province is also able to produce an estimated 800 m3 per day of mineral water for between 20 and 30 years.

 

Water resource:

 

The province have abundant underground water sources, provided by the systems of Serepok, Ba and Dong Nai rivers, favorable for irrigation and water provision serving the development of agriculture, forestry and industries.

 

Power system:

 

The Dak Lak power system is undergoing rapid development. Since 2005 all districts, cities, towns, communes and wards in the province have been attached to the national power grid.

 

Information and telecommunication:

 

The Dak Lak post and telecommunication authorities are digitizing the telecommunication networks and building mobile, messenger and card phone systems. Since 2005, all communes in the province have a telephone. There are currently 40 telephones per 100 people.

 

Tourist potential:

 

With its impressive natural landscape, beautiful waterfalls, large lakes, forests with abundant and various ecological systems as well as Highland minority cultural sites Dak Lak has the potential to develop a thriving tourist industry, with and emphasisi on ecological and cultural tourism.

 

Population and labor:

 

According to a 2005 demographic survey, the population of Dak Lak is 1,714,855 people, of which 865,553 are male and 849,302 are female. The urban population is 379,662 persons, representing 21.7 percent of the population. The rural population is 1,335,193 persons, representing 77.3 percent. The province’s population density is lower than the country average country at only 130.65 persons per km2. There are 932.314 people of working age, representing 54.4 percent of the total population. The state economic sector employs 74,098 people. The percentage of qualified labor is still modest, about 30 percent, and 8,793 workers have a tertiary qualification. 6,041 workers have an intermediate or similar degree.

 

The labor structure (in 2005) is as follows:

 

·         Labor in industries and construction sectors: 29,754 people;

·         Labor in agriculture, forestry and fisheries: 625,589 people;

·         Labor in services: 61,055 people.

 

Annually, more than 20 thousand pupils graduate from high schools and vocational training schools to participate in the labor force.
